BACKGROUND

I was Assistant Professor of Piano at Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri, from 1998-2001, when WLC called me. I accepted the Divine Call to teach in the Wisconsin Lutheran College Music Department in 2001. At the time there was interest among prospective students for the college to have a music professor with the terminal degree in Piano Performance.

I have a strong interest in preparing students for service to the church, having started playing piano and organ for mission congregations in Florida about age 12. I like to say that I learned to drive, driving from our home in Winter Park to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Merritt Island when Pastor Larry Zwieg was without an organist, until his daughter became accomplished enough to take over.

TEACHING

Depending on the year, I have taught/do teach Piano Lessons, Music Theory 1 and 2, Aural Skills 1, 2, 3, 4, Piano Classes 1, 2, 3, Piano Pedagogy 1, Piano Pedagogy 2, Accompanying, Piano Literature, Music Fundamentals, and Music Appreciation. I plan to propose a GenEd course on Women in Music, including classical, jazz, popular, and world music.

Research Topics

My doctoral treatise was about the Dutch woman pianist and composer, Henriette Bosmans. While doing additional research in the Netherlands, I “discovered” other Dutch composers less known to American audiences. So far this has led to performances of works for Piano and Oboe and Piano and Cello by these composers, in addition to conference presentations, a CD, and a research book.
